National Public Lands Day
2007

The huge slab of granite that stood before me was a lifeless, yet dominant reminder of Utah’s great grizzly of old. The monument held me in a mind racing, heart pounding trance that had me in Frank Clark’s shoes back on August 21 1923, reliving that long terrifying night of fighting for my very life with a… whoa Larry, you ok asks John as I recoil in fear from his grabbing my shoulder, lets get back to the fence, it won’t build itself.

The Wasatch Outlaw Wheelers National Public Lands Day project for 2007 was to fence off an unwarranted ATV stream crossing and fence in a parking area for the visitors of the mighty Old Ephraim Grizzly Bear resting grounds.
A small, but work serious pack of Outlaws drove north and eastward for two hours to team up with a group from the National Forest Service, Cache Ranger District. During the pleasant and very colorful drive through our public forests we were treated to the eye candy colors of deep blazing red and rain slicker yellow leaves hanging so delicately to the only home they have known. These were punctuated by the deep jade of evergreen trees and brown hues of moist loam through out. The beauty before me was a reminder of why it is that we wheelers fight so hard to keep our public lands and trails open. I myself need to “feel and be one with the earth” every so often. My sense of touch on trees, leaves, flowers; the very dirt itself is a spiritual centering rite for me. However…I digress.

The work of digging multiple two foot deep holes in rocky terrain was an exercise in strength, patience and fortitude. With the uprights solidly buried, we focused our energy to the top railing. The railing poles were strategically notched to fit like a glove on top of their buried brothers, all tied together by the use of multiple eight inch long lag bolts After a day’s worth of withstanding rain, snow, and also perfect weather, we were able to stand back and take in a long serious look at our work and feel satisfied. Our end results would make the “Late Great Grizzly” proud.

I would like to personally thank the volunteers from the Cache National Forest Service
Connie McCaughey: Organizer and ubiquitous master of the post hole digger.
Ron Garrison: Always smiling and he shared his soup and sunflower seeds with me.
Erik Skabelund: An absolute artist with the chainsaw, surgical precision at 6000 RPM
Chris Brotherson: Go getter, always there to help.
Peggy Wilson: busy, busy, busy and a positive ray of sunshine.
And Dan Miller from the Bear River Watershed Council: Always good to work side by side with you.

Looking forward to more projects in 2008!

Olsen, Larry
October 09 2007

Before any serious work could get done some Planning and details were worked out. Here John Waldron explains to Scott Bowcutt that Larry Olsen is the leader of the group. Larry organized the event and continues to work with the Forest Service on projects year after year. John further explains the Larry has the proper technique for leaning on a shovel and as the boss he is the only one allowed this privilege. You can clearly see the dismay is Scott face, But work site rules are work site rules.

Joel is also wishing he had a shovel, but as John explain earlier, only the boss man gets to lean on a shovel.

Dogs like everything, dogs like roads, dogs like, fences, dogs like treats.

Either way the Outlaws did a fantastic job once again building a big fence and dazzling the Forest Service with our good looks and fence building skills.

Please take a look at all the pages and if you get a chance Thanks Crazy Larry and the rest of the gang next time ya see them.

The NPLD Adventures and Fence building continues
